Scope
Climate, Health, and Cities
Building a Healthy Planet
How should we balance buildings so that they support the health of the planet and the health of the people? How well do we realize and understand the health effects of climate change?
The changing climate is causing increased stress to both buildings and their users. Today, the built environment is responsible for about 40% of global greenhouse emissions. Climate change is also the underlying driver behind many physical and mental health threats. This applies not only to humans but to most life on our planet. Meeting the goals of limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, as stated in the Paris Agreement, is not possible without strong action in construction.
The Climate, Health, and Cities training program is a future-oriented, clear, factual, and optimistic program focusing on climate change and its relationship to human activities, the built environment, and health.
During this intensive training program, participants will not only deepen their understanding of climate change but also learn how to put the learning into practice. The program participants will gain the tools to take action on climate change and learn how to contribute to a better future.

Modules
WEEK 1 – SETTING THE TARGET
Schedule
April 2, 2024, 9:15-11:15 AM (EEST)
Location
Zoom-meeting
In Week 1, we learn how to set the target for your climate action. We will approach this through discussing climate tipping points caused by urban consumption patterns. This may be a bit more complicated than you think, and class pointers and examples of past projects will help you find a direction.
Please note that you must complete the pre-program online course, Micro-Certificate in Climate, Health and Cities, before joining Week 1.
WEEK 2 – STAKEHOLDERS AND VULNERABILITY
Schedule
April 9, 2024, 9:15-11:15 AM (EEST)
Location
Zoom-meeting
In Week 2 we take a deeper dive into who the stakeholders in climate action are, and how differently vulnerability is divided between most groups. Our actions should address those who are most likely to suffer. We discuss applying a lifecycle approach to the built environment and anything we design. We also look at how to collaborate during different stages of the project lifecycles.
WEEK 3 – TIGHTEN THE FOCUS
Schedule
April 16, 2024, 9:15-11:15 AM (EEST)
Location
Zoom-meeting
Week 3 teaches us to focus on where we can have the most effect. We cannot fix all global problems in one project, and therefore finding the focus is important. We learn about segmenting our audiences and starting to structure our action into steps. The biggest learning of the week is actually not in what to do, but what not to do – as we don’t want to waste our efforts! You will also learn about managing and measuring your action.
WEEK 4 – MAKING A PLAN
Schedule
April 23, 2023, 9:15-11:15 AM (EEST)
Location
Zoom-meeting
In Week 4 your action plan will start to take shape! The course materials include a project planning template which will be introduced so that you will be sure to cover all the relevant bases. We all start to think about the content and the targets you are pursuing in detail. Log frame plans can also be used.
WEEK 5 – MID TERM – SHOW AND TELL!
Schedule
April 30, 2024, 9:15-11:15 AM (EEST)
Location
Zoom-meeting
Week 5 is a milestone! Everyone gets to present their draft action plans and practice their presentation skills. You will receive group feedback - and will also be asked to comment on the projects of your peers. A session of many discoveries!
WEEK 6 – EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Schedule
May 7, 2024, 9:15-11:15 AM (EEST)
Location
Zoom-meeting
Week 6 focuses on how to get your message across in the best possible way. We teach you pitching, and narrative and injunctive norms. People who have studied these skills always stand out. You will learn how to pick the key elements of your work and make them come alive. You will also become familiar with relevant indicators to relevant stakeholders – in other words, how to measure your work.
WEEK 7 – CONNECTING TO VALUES
Schedule
May 14, 2024, 9:15-11:15 AM (EEST)
Location
Zoom-meeting
Week 7 brings us into contact with values and values-based planning. Values guide our decisions in design, and are important for defending the goals you wish to achieve. Your values may be quite different from your neighbour’s. What kind of values can we use to bring people together in climate action? Does climate action change our, and society’s values?
WEEK 8 – FINE-TUNING
Schedule
May 21, 2024, 9:15-11:15 AM (EEST)
Location
Zoom-meeting
Week 8 is mostly reserved for group tutoring and fine-tuning your projects. The devil is in the details. But god is also in the details. We show some great examples of positive campaigning and use of humour. This is the week to bring your last creative questions to your peers and the instructors.
WEEK 9 – TERM FINALS
Schedule
May 28, 2024, 9:15-11:15 AM (EEST)
Location
Zoom-meeting
In week 9 we get to celebrate everyone’s achievements in the final presentations. Each participant presents their portfolio project and receives feedback, encouragement and ideas on how to continue the work. Course reflections are invited and feedback requested.
